Web Series Review: Demonologist For Hire (2017)

Demonologist For Hire is a 4-episode comedy/horror web series published between November 2017, and March 2018. The episodes were directed by Uisdean Murray and starred writer and creator of the series Bryn Owen, character actor Ronni Menzies-Stirling, and some other guests.
The first episode: Episode 1 – The Vexing Case of the Haunted Car clocks in just under seven minutes, and is about, well, a haunted car. The Demonologist (Bryn Owen) is called because the car has been speaking to his client (Ronni Menzies-Stirling). The car does have a pretty good sense of humor, though, and overall, was a pretty fun short.
The second episode: Episode 2- The Trouble with Deities has a running time of just over 8:30. The Demonologist gets hired by a security guard because there is an evil-looking woman (Leanne Peebles) in the building he is working in. The Demonologist identifies her as an ancient deity. He calls a priest (David Hughes) to help, and attempts to persuade the Deity to leave. This episode was also pretty fun and had a nice ribbing of a U.S. president.
The third episode: Episode 3 – Stranger Correspondence starts off with a letter being read aloud to the Demonologist. It’s from a man named Christopher Broomielaw who owns a yarn factory asking for the Demonologist to help. As the Demonologist walks through the factory, the correspondence between Christopher and the Demonologist continues to be read in the background. This one was ok, and had an interesting approach, but not as strong as the first two. It also only ran for 5:04.
Last but not least: Episode 4 – Werewolf of Wall Street has a running time just under five minutes. The Demonologist is called out to a location by a priest because there is a werewolf living there. This one was our favorite. It had a clever twist to go along with the humor and was the most entertaining of the four.
Overall: For what they had to work with, Demonologist For Hire is a pretty fun concept with a lot of potential. It brings a lot of quality to the table. The acting was good, the cinematography was good, the writing was good for the most part, and they were able to pull off a quality production with little resources. Some companies with much larger budgets than this have not done as well with the resources available to them, and this plays an important part in the production. It’s not what you have, it’s how well you use it. (That’s what she said?) And this is an example of putting their resources to good use. We definitely recommend that you check this out if you are into horror/comedy and if you feel so inclined, also check out the recently launched Indiegogo campaign they put together so they can make another season. We are always willing to help #SupportIndieHorror, and would love to see this happen.
