Short Film Review: The Childish Thing (2017)

Director’s Statement:
The Childish Thing is an attempt by me and my very talented, very tolerant friends to make something a little off-beat. No blood. No power tools. Only the occasional four-letter word. A kind of gateway horror, like Poltergeist or Stranger Things. Something personal, something surprising and, God Willing, something affecting.
Made for the price of a minor kitchen appliance.

The concept for this film is awesome. It isn’t often you see something new, but we hadn’t seen anything quite like it before. This is definitely something to be appreciated, as originality is hard to come by these days. It did definitely feel very personal, and that was a nice touch as well. For being on a small budget, the quality was fantastic. The sound, camerawork, and production was great, and all of the actors did an excellent job in their roles.

Normally we would point out flaws, inconsistencies, or other things to note that we thought could have used some improvement on. In all honesty, the only thing we would have liked to see is more! This is a great concept for a film and was executed well for being a short film on a budget.

The Childish Thing is a fantastic horror film that reaches into you to find that inner child and pulls it out of hiding to remind it what it was afraid of. The concept itself is simple enough, but it’s refreshing because it is an original one. And not only that, it was executed well. In a world of remakes, reboots, and regurgitation, originality is most welcome and the imagination and quality here is definitely appreciated. We can’t stress enough how much we enjoyed this film, and sincerely hope that everyone sees it. It’s an imaginative throwback to where horror really starts for everyone at first. Wonderful job by the entire cast and crew, which we hope to see together again in future projects.
