Movie Review: I Was A Teenage Wereskunk (2016)

I Was a Teenage Wereskunk is a throwback to the classic 50’s monster movie era and a great one at that. Written and directed by Neal Mclaughlin, this film captures the essence that era very well. Everything from the set pieces like furniture, to clothes and hairstyles all being themed, to prices of food on menus, an intro tune that sounds like something right out of Elvis’ catalog, and a musical number in a malt shop are just a couple of examples of the great amount of detail that was put into it. The story is about a teenage boy who realizes that he is turning into a wereskunk, and can’t control his urges to kill, because he starts changing into the wereskunk when he can’t control his other urges.
I Was a Teenage Wereskunk is a comedy-horror, so there are quite a few funny parts to it. Obviously, a wereskunk is a great choice for a monster. He terrorizes the town like no other wereskunk has before, and the town tries to pick up the pieces. The dialogue was very well-written for the characters, and they acted their 1950’s personas really well. Everything from the “Jiminy!” exclamations from Curtis, (Scott Monahan) to the innocent and well-mannered girls Mary Beth (Shey Lyn Zanotti) and Sally (Christian Lee Drerup) was right on target. There are some other interesting aspects of some characters that we can’t give away without spoiling anything, but Deputy Gary was a riot, and Officer Maggie had some interesting…. chemisty?
Overall, this was just a fantastic film, and it was a really fun one to watch. It’s hard to pull off comedy-horror, and to do this so well in a different time period is impressive. This is an absolute must for any fans of old-school monster films. Don’t be a square, and make sure to pick up a copy for yourselves when it releases on October 28th!
