Movie Review: I Am Alone (2015)

I Am Alone is an award-winning adventure/horror film from Abstract Forces Productions. It was directed by Robert A. Palmer and co-written by Palmer and Michael A. Weiss. It begins in a CDC (Center for Disease Control) bunker where a man named Mason Riley (Gunner Wright) is being questioned five days after a viral outbreak has begun. The man questioning Mason is Dr. Marlow (Marshal Hilton), who is trying to figure out how it came to be, and how to stop it. Mason was part of the crew of a reality TV show called “I Am Alone” in which their partner and star of the show, Jacob Fitts (Gareth David-Lloyd) were out in the Colorado Rockies filming an episode, and the CDC has recovered his footage. The footage documents the recordings Jacob filmed for the show, and also his experience starting from the beginning of the outbreak. Jacob gets into an altercation with one of the infected and gets bitten, and it shows a timeline of his struggle with the infection while being completely unaware of the outbreak that occurred.
The first thing to note is that this was filmed using a lot of different types of cameras, which is really unique, and very well-done here. Some of the film is shot using the security camera footage where the scene takes place. Some of it was shot from the perspective of Go-Pro cameras attached to the film crew, and some shots from other normal cameras. This is not something that is easily pulled off but was really impressive in this case. It is a really seamless viewing experience, and it’s nice to have varying perspectives in a horror film like this, as it keeps the perspective fresh. You can tell that a lot of time was invested in the cinematography, and it really shines here. It also doesn’t hurt that the Colorado landscape where it was filmed is absolutely beautiful. The production department really found a great way to accentuate the isolation that Jacob is experiencing in the mountains. An excellent job was done by them all around. Everything from the camera, lighting and sound department was great.
The acting in this film is also fantastic. The actors were all experienced, and it really makes a huge difference in indie productions. There wasn’t a time when the dialogue seemed weird or out of place, and the lines seemed very natural. Even the infected were impressive. The director and writers definitely had a clear vision for this film, and they really put together a solid team.
I Am Alone has a lot of really unique elements, a great cast, and crew, and definitely ranks up there among the best virus outbreak/zombie infection films to date. We can’t say enough good things about it to do it enough justice, so please do yourself a favor and watch it for yourself.
