Short Film Review: Girls Night 2 (2018)

by

Girls Night 2 is the followup to David Teixeira’s 2017 short film Girl’s Night which we reviewed in January.
Synopsis: “One year after the deadly events of last year’s Halloween, Jess (Marina de Sousa) keeps having the same nightmare over and over where she finds herself helpless in front of a masked killer. Her friend Pierre (VincentConty) invites her to spend some time with him at his house and decides to throw a cozy and innocent pajama party to try to keep her mind occupied. While her nightmares seem to be getting intense by the minute, Jess can’t shake the idea that the killer may be back to pay her a visit.”
Like the first film, this one clocks in at just over 13 minutes.

It starts off with Jess hearing the voices of the past calling for Bloody Mary, which was the catalyst for the events that took place in the first film, and is why she has been having nightmares for the past year. At her friend Pierre’s, they are hanging out watching a movie on Halloween night a year later, and there is a knock at the door after they pass out. After waking up to find that Jess is no longer next to him, Pierre finds himself experiencing some horror of his own.
Girls Night 2 definitely falls right in line with the original in that they didn’t stray far from the first one in terms of style, and approach and both are good in this film. A lot of films will sometimes lose focus in a sequel, but it’s great to see a followup like this that stays right in the pocket as if it was all part of the original film.

The cinematography and sound were good in this film, much like the first one. They really nailed the atmosphere, and it’s a nice continuation of the story. In short films, it’s probably most important to bring the tension because there isn’t a lot of time for buildup, and this film accomplishes that well. Teixeira has a great intuition for horror atmosphere, and it would be great to see him working on a feature-length film in the future.

We definitely recommend checking both short films out, and we hope to see more from him soon!
