Movie Review: Weedjies: Halloweed Night

Directed by Danny Draven (Aliens Gone Wild, Reel Evil) and written by Shane Bitterling (Puppet Master X: Axis Rising, Beneath Loch Ness), Brockton McKinney (Evil Bong 666, Puppet Master: Blitzkrieg Massacre), and legend Charles Band himself behind the original idea, Weedjies: Halloweed Night is a pretty sweet nod to films like Ghoulies, Critters, Gremlins or pretty much any other film where little creatures are just running amok and wreaking havoc.
The film takes place in Las Vegas. A group of college students Madison (Brett Hargrave), Dallas (Victoria Strange), Frankie (Yo Ying) and Claude (Johnny Lee) is having a party at a hotel they have to themselves on Halloween night to help fund their next semester at college. Their party is pretty successful at drawing a large crowd, and one guest, in particular, brings the Weedjie board with her. She calls herself Baroness (Denise Milfort) and after introducing herself and the game, she convinces them to play. They manage to release the Weedjies from the board in the process, and the game becomes a scramble to try to get them back into the board before midnight or they will be taken into the board instead.
The four hosts decide to split up into pairs to find the Weedjies. Claude has a bit of a crush on Dallas and they pair up, and Madison and Frankie pair up. The rest of the partygoers are unaware until they happen to cross paths with the Weedjies, and as you can probably imagine, it doesn’t go well for them when this happens. Meanwhile, there is also a puzzle game going on where guests are searching for clues that will lead them to Claude’s “Golden Nug”. Being that it’s Halloween, everyone is in costume, and there were some pretty cool partygoers dressed as some of our favorite Full Moon Features characters like Blade, Tunneler and even The Gingerdead Man. There were also some guest appearances in the film such as The Howard Stern Show’s Richard Christy and Medicated Pete, comedian Ester Goldberg, Instagram model Misty Mason, Evil Bong franchise veteran Mindy Robinson, Playboy superstar Bridget Marquardt and internet film critic Shawn “Cool Duder” Phillips.
These types of films have always held a special place in our hearts, and this one is no exception. It has something to do with the combination of low-budget charm, small creatures in situations that are a bit silly, and, of course, the horror. There’s just something about the contrast there. In Ghoulies they were coming out of toilets, in Gremlins they were swinging from fans, and in Weedjies: Halloweed Night they are smoking weed, drinking, stealing bicycles and cars, and doing just about any other reprehensible action they can get into.
Overall, we think that Weedjies: Halloweed Night does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of Ghoulies, and other small creature films while also doing a pretty good job at making it their own thing. The film in itself was a lot of fun to watch, and had a lot of moments where we were cracking up at how silly some of the situations were. Weedjies: Halloweed Night is also the first feature film to be released from the highly anticipated “Deadly Ten” anthology and will be available exclusively on the Full Moon Features Channel and App. We would absolutely recommend that you add this to your Halloween film marathons this year. Just make sure to finish it before midnight, or you might see the Weedjies yourself!
