Movie Review: The Visitor (2022)

Written by Simon Boyes, and Adam Mason, and directed by Justin P. Lange, The Visitor is a psychological horror-thriller that also has some elements of folk horror and a bit of slow-burn.
The film starts off with a couple Robert (Finn Jones) and Maia (Jessica McNamee) who are moving from London into Maia’s childhood home after her father passed away and she inherited it. While settling in, Robert finds a painting in the attic in which one of the people bears a strong resemblance to him. He starts to notice the people in the town get progressively more strange, and he starts to unravel a much deeper story than he wanted to as he begins finding more paintings with his likeness.
The best thing about this film is the atmosphere and production. There is always an ominous feeling like something is lurking around the corner. It does a great job of setting somewhat of a bleak mood while keeping you on your toes with building tension. We really loved the cinematography and score. Jones does a great job as a husband trying to keep it together in a situation that would drive anyone mad.
Overall, The Visitor has a pretty interesting premise that was shot really well and has good tension and atmosphere when it’s called for. It also has some elements of folk horror, and that definitely shines in some places as well. The acting was great, the score and overall atmosphere were excellent, and we would definitely recommend The Visitor to lovers of psychological slow-burn horror/thrillers.
The Visitor is releasing tomorrow, October 7th, on digital and on-demand from Blumhouse and Paramount. Check out the trailer below!
