Movie Review: StageFright (AKA Deliria) (1987)

by

Directed by Michele Soavi (Cemetary Man), and written by George Eastman and Sheila Goldberg, StageFright is a horror/thriller about a theatre acting crew who locks themselves in the building where they are rehearsing a show only to find out that someone is locked in there with them that is hunting them down.

Like many horror films of the ’80s, StageFright really shines in a lot of areas. The acting was great, the keyboard synth score and cinematography were awesome, and there are a lot of nice practical effect kills that were shot well.

The characters were all interesting and there was just enough character-building without going overboard. They did a fantastic job with this. There were a couple of questionable plot points, but what horror film doesn’t have some? The dialogue was pretty well-written and seemed natural, and that is what was most important. In films like this when people are all stuck together in a confined space, things can go downhill pretty quickly if the dialogue suffers. Definitely not the case here.

Overall, this was a great ’80s horror film packed with just about everything you could want. A mystery killer, some nice gore, and awesome production value. We would highly recommend this one to all horror fans out there. If you are in the mood for a somewhat lesser-known ’80s treat, watch StageFright. You won’t regret it.
