Movie Review: Slayers (2022)

by

Slayers is a horror/comedy film written by Zack Imbrogno and K. Asher Levin and also directed by K. Asher Levin. It’s about a group of live streamers and influencers known as the “Stream Team” who are invited to a mansion for a collaboration deal but get mixed up with some vampires who are the ones who lured them there under false pretenses.

What we liked:

  1. This was a different take on the vampire genre, which is always a nice thing to see. Some originality is always welcome in this genre.
  2. The production quality was pretty good. There was some cheesy CGI gore, but it wasn’t the worst we have seen.
  3. There were some references in dialogue and easter eggs for some classic movies throughout the film.

What we thought could have been better:

  1. There were times when this film seems to miss the mark. For instance, the streamers all seemed incredibly generic and not believable. The one who played COD was using only the keyboard, and was not a pro but also competing in the semifinals somewhere. It just seemed like there wasn’t a lot of effort researching the characters or streaming, and that is the entire backbone of these character arcs.
  2. The special effects were overused sometimes in places that didn’t need them. In one fight scene, there are words popping up on the screen when people get hit like it’s 1960’s Batman, there are air horns going off, and there is also some crazy techno music going on. It just didn’t seem to fit. And there were a couple of instances like this.
  3. The mysterious old man badass gimmick has been done to death, and the narration was unnecessary.

Overall, we think that this film had potential, but it gets too busy and doesn’t have a lot of fluidity. We think that it was a good effort, but was too busy for its own good.
