Movie Review: Silhouette (2019)

Silhouette is an independent horror film written and directed by Mitch McLeod and from Absentia Pictures. It’s about a married couple who are dealing with the loss of their child together and move to a secluded house to work on their relationship and to battle some demons. It stars April Hartman as Amanda Harms, and Tom Zembrod as Jack Harms. They both did a fantastic job in these roles.
What we liked:
The tone of this film is very bleak most of the time. The cinematography, lighting, and sound create a nice atmosphere that lends itself well to the story and how the characters are feeling throughout the film.
The makeup department did a great job making the married couple look like shit. And in a good sense. They look like they have been up for days and not taking care of themselves.
There were a few scenes that we really enjoyed where the horror really shined.
What we thought could have been better:
While the story was interesting, we thought the pacing could have been a bit better.
The film could have used some more scares.
Overall:
Overall, we thought Silhouette was a great indie horror film. It really nailed the bleak visual representation of a couple who is dealing with a lot of dark emotions and struggling to maintain their relationship and the emptiness that comes with the loss of a child. You can really feel what they are going through while watching it from an outside perspective. While there were some traditional horror elements we really wish were focused on more, this film seemed to be more focused on the internalizing horror that the couple is experiencing and it was portrayed well through the camera, which can be a challenging thing to get right but managed to do so perfectly. There are also a lot of surreal interactions throughout the film that add to the overall weird picture that is being painted. This film does clock in on the longer side at almost two hours, and we thought it could have used some better pacing, but it was worth seeing through.
We would definitely recommend Silhouette to fans of slow-burn, surreal and atmospheric horror. McLeod definitely did a great job with this bizarre, but human horror experience and hope we see more from him again soon.
