Movie Review: Sideworld: Terrors of the Sea (2022)

by

From Rubicon Films, director George Popov and writer Jonathan Russell, Sideworld: Terrors of the Sea is a documentary about phantom ships, folklore, and monsters that haunt the seas.

Chapter 1 recounts stories of several ghost ships like those who came to rest in The Goodwin Sands to the legendary Flying Dutchman.

Chapter 2 goes into depth (pun intended) about sea monsters like Leviathan, Cthuhlu, Sea Serpents, and Morgawr’s Mile.

Chapter 3 covers Spectral Sailors like Jack Tar, The sweetheart’s cove.

Chapter 4 explores the stories and lore of mermaids and mermen.

Much like the first entry in this series titled Sideworld: Haunted Forests of England, this documentary on the terrors of the sea is full of eerie music and imagery that set the tone for each ghastly tale. Popov does the narration, and he does a fantastic job of recounting all of these stories. It was nice to see references to Lovecraft in there, and they also provide real-world examples of people who have allegedly witnessed many of these things first-hand.

Overall, we would highly recommend that lovers of documentaries about haunted places or stories about ghosts in the vast unknown that is the sea.
