Movie Review: Parts Unknown (2018)

by

Parts Unknown is a horror film centered around wrestling and is written and directed by Richard Chandler. It clocks in at just under two hours, and there are a lot of good and bad elements that make up the time.

What we liked:
– The premise was pretty fun. Any horror film that likes to go a bit outside the box and incorporate classic horror themes with wrestling is on the imaginative side, and it’s always refreshing to see new ideas.
– There was a substantial amount of blood and gore, and it was low-budget but had a lot of imagination.
– Jake the Snake Roberts has a voice-acting part in this.
– The scenes where the horror was more prevalent were great.

What we thought could have been better:
– The length of this film was too much. There was a lot of unnecessary filler in this film, and it seemed like they had a vision at the beginning, but they stray too far from the actual horror and wrestling too often.
– The sound really could have used some TLC. It has its moments, but in a lot of scenes, it really suffers.
– Not enough wrestling! The entire premise of the film is based on wrestling.

Overall:
Parts Unknown had a lot of promise. It felt like they had a lot of ideas about which direction to take, and veered too far from the concept. We were expecting a wrestling romp with a lot more action, and some killing in between matches. There was just too much time in-between the horror and wrestling to make it interesting enough to warrant a two-hour running time. If the writing had been tightened up a bit, and they had more of the wrestling, blood, and horror it would have been great, but unfortunately, instead of a crushing DDT, it kicks out too many times and ends up being closer to a low-blow to a schoolboy.
