Movie Review: Other Halves (2015)

by

Other Halves is a horror film directed by Matthew T. Price, and co-written by Price and Kelly Morr. The film is about a group of developers who come up with the idea to build a dating app called “Other Halves” where it uses your phone’s knowledge of your personal life to match you rather than the usual methods. There is a glitch in the software that causes some serious unintended side-effects when viewing it on screen, and the results are not ideal depending on who you ask.

After a charming commercial for the app done by Devon (Lauren Lakis) the following scene kicks off where most of the film takes place, which is in an office in San Francisco. The group is getting to work on some bug fixing as they are supposed to launch the app the following day to the public. It is spearheaded by Jasmine (Mercedes Manning) who is really pushing them hard to get things done, as they keep getting distracted. Devon, Jana (Melanie Friedrich), Shawn (Sam Schweikert), and Beth (Megan Hui) grind away at the code to resolve a welcome screen which is causing some problems. Elle (Lianna Liew) shows up to meet up with Jasmine and start some trouble which turns out to be a lot more, and Beth’s boyfriend Mike (Carson Nicely) stops by as well to hang out.

The story was refreshing, and it was nice to see something that was somewhat different. We loved the special effects and the overall quality of the production. Great job here in the sound, cinematography, and lighting departments. And Price did a fantastic job directing this, as it was his first feature in that department. The acting was also pretty good in this, and most of the cast had some experience coming into this, which was nice.

If there was anything we would have liked to see more of it would be atmosphere. There was a lot of skipping around in timelines which breaks the tension a bit.

Overall, Other Halves was a solid indie horror film. We thought the concept was great, the overall quality was awesome and the acting was good, all things that will usually bring success in an indie film, and this was no exception. We definitely recommend this to horror fans who are looking for a quality film with a few surprises.
