Movie Review: Offseason (2022)

by

Offseason is an indie horror film brought to you by RLJE Films, and Shudder. Written and directed by Mickey Keating (Carnage Park, Psychopaths), Offseason is a slow-burn horror thriller with some definite hints of cosmic horror. It takes place on an island where the main character Marie (Jocelin Donahue) is urgently called back to an island where her mother was buried because someone had desecrated her grave.

Marie gets there with her boyfriend George (Joe Swanberg) and they definitely feel like something is not right after getting to the graveyard. The people are strange, the town is spooky, and the overall vibe is just eerie. Marie and George get separated after they crash their car trying to leave, and Marie has to face the demons. As Marie starts to unravel the mystery around the town and her mother, she realizes that there is much more at play than she originally thought.

This film had a lot going for it. The cast was great. Donahue and Swanberg have been in some great horror films, and Richard Brake is even in there and plays a part as the drawbridge watch. The cinematography was superb, as was the production quality as a whole. We think they definitely could have leaned more into the horror side of things, as there was a lot of opportunity for more tension, but the final product is a pretty decent slow-burn horror film with some well-executed Lovecraft influence.

Overall, we definitely recommend Offseason if you are a fan of Lovecraft, slow-burn horror, or both.

Offseason was released today, June 14th, 2022 on DVD and Blu-ray
