Movie Review: Lake Fear 3 (2018)

After having seen Lake Fear, and Lake Fear 2, we were hoping to see a refreshing follow-up to the original film with Lake Fear 3. Lake Fear 2 isn’t related to Lake Fear and takes place in a swamp, but the third installment is tied to the original. Both Lake Fear and Lake Fear 2 originally also had different names, so there are a lot of confusing inconsistency questions before even diving into the film, but we decided to give it a shot.
Michael Crum is the director for both Lake Fear and Lake Fear 3. He also did the cinematography for part 1, and Gerald Crum is responsible for writing both part 1, and 3. Part 3, which we are focusing on here takes place two years after the first one. Unfortunately, while this film had good vision and some great qualities, it also suffers from a few of the same problems the original did.
What we liked:
– The concept for this film was fun. It’s always nice to see a sequel that captures the same essence as its predecessor, and this film accomplishes that well.
– The special effects were enjoyable. There are some pretty cheesy practical effects but in a good way. The costume design was pretty awesome as well in some cases.
– There was a decent amount of gore to go around, and it was done pretty well for practical effects in an indie production like this one.
What we thought could have been better:
– While Crum didn’t take cinematography duties on in this film, it had some questionable directorial shots that the first film also suffered from, but this was less noticeable in this film.
– There were some sound inconsistencies in production.
– There were a few scenes where the writing just didn’t make sense.
Overall:
While Lake Fear 3 isn’t the best indie horror film we have seen, it does show much improvement over the original that it is a sequel to. It was nice to see Joshua Winch reprise his role as Remington, and he was great in this. The writing and some of the shots were questionable from time-to-time, but Lake Fear 3 is a fun, gory, and imaginative effort from MGI Films, and we hope that we see more from them.
