Movie Review: La Pasajera (The Passenger) (2022)

The Passenger is a horror/sci-fi film written by Luis Sánchez-Polack and directed by Raúl Cerezo, and Fernando González Gómez. It’s about a man named Blasco (Ramiro Blas) who works as a rideshare, and along the way, they also pick up an unexpected and unwelcome passenger.
His first stop is to pick up Marta (Paula Gallego) and her mother Lidia (Cristina Alcázar). He already has another customer, Mariela, (Cecilia Suárez). After some short introductions, they are off to their destination in his classic van, “Nessa”. They unexpectedly stop along the way after nightfall and see a mysterious object on the ground that appears otherworldly. And things start to get a bit interesting after that.
The first thing we noticed about this film was the quality of the cinematography. There are some beautiful exterior shots, and the director definitely had a great vision for these scenes. The acting was fantastic as well. There is a lot of dialogue on this road trip they are on, and to pull that off, and keep it interesting is something that takes a lot of talent in the writing and acting departments. A lot of indie films have one or the other, but the chemistry was just there in The Passenger.
Getting into the horror side of things, there were a lot of things that were just done right. The special effects were awesome, and they were executed well. The practical effects were great, and the digital effects were high-quality and not cheesy. On top of that, there were some pretty grotesque scenes in there that made The Passenger feel like something right out of the Lovecraft universe.
Overall, we would highly recommend checking out The Passenger. It has something for everyone. The acting, production quality, and special effects were top-notch. There is some well-placed tension, some humor at times, and just an all-around great cosmic horror experience that would make Lovecraft proud and that the whole family can enjoy.
The Passenger is available tomorrow, June 3, 2022 in theaters, and will be on-demand and on DVD starting June 28th.
