Movie Review: Killer Sofa (2019)

Killer Sofa is an indie horror film written and directed by Bernie Rao. It’s actually a killer recliner, but close enough. After a short introduction explaining some of the grisly beginnings of the evil furniture and some character intros, it dives right into the story. The film focuses on a girl named Francesca who finds herself the new owner of a recliner by way of a note left in a storage unit instructing for it to be delivered to her.
Francesca has a lot of other things on her mind, though, as her ex-boyfriend Fredrico was found dead recently. She had filed a restraining order against him prior to his passing, and the police were investigating the murder and asking her questions. She and her friend Maxi leave to go to get the recliner that has been delivered.
The recliner wastes no time getting to the seduction and takes quite a liking to Francesca. It also wastes no time getting to the bloodshed. Despite it being a piece of furniture, it seriously does a fantastic job of finding ways to seduce women and spill some blood. The scenes where the recliner is killing people or attempting to are very well-shot and creative. And the atmosphere in this film was actually quite good despite the cheesy concept. A lot of credit is due to James Dunlop who did the music for this film which pretty much was solely responsible for driving the atmosphere. Great work in the sound department.
For being Bernie Rao‘s feature directorial and writing debut, the film is actually quite decent overall. There are also some really great choices for camera shots when it cuts to the recliner just being in non-traditional places. There were quite a few times when we got a good laugh out of where the recliner was positioned in some scenes. And despite the main cast not having a lot of acting experience, they all did a great job. The writing made sense for what it was, and there wasn’t anything that was too out of the ordinary in that context for a film about killer furniture.
Overall, Killer Sofa was one hell of a bizarre, but fun film. It has everything you need in a horror film. It has atmosphere, killing, furniture romance (not furniture and romance, but actual furniture romance), witchcraft, voodoo, dybbuks, a good story, decent acting, and some great sound and cinematography. We would definitely recommend adding this to your October lineup this Halloween season. You can find Killer Sofa on itunes, on Amazon to purchase on DVD or rent on Amazon Prime Video as of October 1.
