Movie Review: Holy Shit! (2023)

Written and Directed by Lukas Rinker, Holy Shit! (or Ach du Scheisse!) is a German horror film about a man named Frank (Thomas Niehaus) who wakes up in a porta-potty with a large rebar protruding from his forearm, which he finds himself impaled on. This is quite the predicament for him, and this film is about him trying to escape a really shitty situation before his time runs out, as the porta-potty he is in is located on a demolition site. There’s also some evil afoot. The story and writing were actually impressive in this. It may not seem like an interesting concept at first glance, but there were several characters, a backstory, and a solid plot that builds nicely throughout the entire film.
The cinematography is outstanding in this film. Most of the film takes place inside a porta-potty, so the scenes had to be shot well in order to pull off the illusion of being inside there with Frank as he struggles to free himself. Niehaus also really sells it as Frank. He was incredible in his performance in this. The success of this film heavily relies on character expression, and being that the camera is mainly focused on him in close proximity, he did an excellent job here. There was also a good amount of gore and just some nice special effects in general. The gore was very well done. There were some practical and some CGI effects, but good CGI and used sparingly.
Overall, we were really impressed with this film. It has a little bit of everything in there. It’s got action, horror, romance, comedy, betrayals, friendships, killings, and one man who is determined to get out of a porta-potty. It’s like a shitty escape room. Literally. But in the best possible way. It’s a unique film and concept that was pulled off brilliantly, and that should be applauded. We would definitely recommend that horror fans check this one out.
