Movie Review: Fractured (2016)

Fractured is a horror/thriller film directed by Jamie Patterson. It was co-written by Patterson and Christian Hearn. It begins following a couple who is out on a trip to the countryside, but things take an unsuspecting turn, and not everything is as it seems. Things start to get eerie on the way to their destination and get even eerier when they arrive. It’s not an easy film to review as a horror, as it is definitely more in the thriller category. It’s also one of those films where you will give too much away if you really go into the plot too much, but what started off seeming like a normal “couple in a creepy house getting spooked” turns out to be a much more complicated and welcome scenario. It has a really nice and unsuspected twist that is out of left field, but a satisfying one. There is some fantastic misdirection that we definitely didn’t see coming, and was a breath of fresh air when it comes to twists.
The quality of everything from the acting to the production was also great, and there are moments where the tension definitely keeps you in the pocket. The tension is all thanks to the sound department and cinematography. The score in this is some of the best we have experienced in an indie film. Some of the camera shots were beautifully done, too. The moments where it needed to ramp up the tension were done really well.
Overall, Fractured is a great film with some really good atmosphere, and while it lends itself more to the thriller genre than horror, it does share a lot of qualities with horror and does dip into the horror side of things from time-to-time. When it does bring the atmosphere, it does a good job of keeping that tension going. It drives the film to the darker side of the thriller genre, and more into horror at key moments of the film. We would definitely recommend this to fans of horror/thriller films in general, or to anyone looking for a film to watch that is a bit lower on the scare spectrum but still with some good moments of tension from time-to-time. Fractured is now available to stream for free on Amazon Prime.
