Movie Review: Ed Gein, The Musical (2010)

by

Ed Gein, The Musical is a horror musical written by Dan Davies and directed by Steve Russell. Yes. You read that correctly. It’s a musical about the life of Ed Gein. It’s getting a new blu-ray release this August so we decided to check it out.

Davies also stars as Ed Gein in this film, and he did a pretty good job in both departments. The characters were all pretty believable and for an indie musical the acting was better than expected. They also did a fantastic job on the set design and keeping with the theme of the 1950s. Everything from the wardrobe and sets to the classic cars was from the time period and added to the atmosphere.

The story is about Gein’s murderous and cannibalistic ways, and while this has been done a few times by other filmmakers throughout the years, this was a pretty creative take on it. The story itself is interesting and dives into his disturbed thought process. It even takes you back to his childhood to give you a glimpse of where his mental illness began.

There were some interesting revisions of songs like Gene Wilder’s “Pure Imagination”, “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music, and “It’s The Hard Knock Life” from Annie. They even had a scene with a barbershop quartet. Definitely some great creativity on that front, and the songs all sounded really good as well.

Overall, Ed Gein, The Musical is something special. While it is a very low-budget production, it has a lot of charm and adds to the experience. Musicals typically aren’t even our thing, but you can tell that a lot of heart went into making this project, and sometimes that’s what makes it. We would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in the Ed Gein story, musicals, or both to give this a watch. You won’t be disappointed.
