Movie Review: Echoes of Fear (2019)

Echoes of Fear is an independent horror film written by Brian Avenet-Bradley (Ghost of the Needle, Dark Remains) and directed by Bradley as well, but also co-directed by Laurence Avenet-Bradley who has a very storied history in the camera department on quite a few projects. It stars Trista Robinson as Alisa, who finds that her grandfather has passed and she needs to prepare his house to sell.
She decides to stay at his house while she does this, and of course, things do not go as expected. First, there is no electricity, then there is some weird intercom noise once the electricity just comes back out of nowhere, and things just pretty much escalate from here
This film is a lot of slow-burn, but unnecessarily. There are plenty of ways that they could have kept the tension going, but it is very spread out. It may have been intentional, but it seems like it would have been a better experience had there been more events. The majority of the film is mostly Alisa in her grandfather’s house by herself, and while she does have a few encounters, there just weren’t enough throughout the film to keep things more interesting.
There were a lot of good scenes cinematography-wise, and we thought the sound department was pretty solid. The lighting was also done really well, as they had to work within small spaces on a few occasions to get shots. The acting was also worth noting. It was pretty solid and didn’t seem like the lines were forced.
Overall, we thought Echoes of Fear was decent for a horror-thriller but didn’t really bring much new to the table. The story was a bit bland, the scares were sparse, and the overall atmosphere is broken too much to keep the actual fear alive. We think that this was a much better thriller than horror, but it did have a decent ending. We would recommend this to indie film lovers who enjoy the more thriller side of things.
