Movie Review: Cube²: Hypercube (2002)

by

This isn’t going to be a long review, as Cube 2 didn’t have a lot to offer. The film is pretty similar to the original in that a group of people travels through the Cube’s doorways looking for a way out and depend on each other for help. There is an old crazy lady, and a couple of people who were out drinking the night before that ended up there (that is a bad hangover scenario), an aggro guy with a knife, a blind girl, and a couple of normalish people. They end up fighting with each other, which was expected, but it seemed more forced in this film.

The travel through the Cube together after all finding each other. There were a couple of new concepts for some of the rooms in the Cube, like gravity being switched around to a different surface in the next room, varying time speeds, and a couple of cheesy CGI traps. It seems like they missed out on a good opportunity to make a followup film that expanded on the actual story a bit more, though. For the most part, the film follows the same exact formula as the first Cube film with an exception to the ending, which explains something, but that part should have been more prevalent. Give the Cube some backstory and lore.

To sum it up, Cube 2 doesn’t offer anything better than the original did. The CGI was done poorly, it seems like it wasn’t written with any thought behind it, the characters were all pretty bland, and the Cube’s traps seemed much less important to their survival. I may have mentioned this in the review for the first film, but again, this is a concept that would really benefit from a reboot. There is so much more that could have been done with the Cube series, and they missed the mark in Cube 2.
