Movie Review: Camp Death III in 2D! (2018)

To be perfectly blunt, Camp Death III in 2D was one almost indescribable experience. The acting may or may not have been good. We don’t know. The writing was definitely interesting, and it was hard to tell whether or not that was even good. There were some moments of gore, but sometimes not in the traditional sense. And we aren’t sure what we just watched. Was it horror? Was it comedy? Was it a scuffed comedy/horror/sci-fi scatfest? We don’t even know! What we do know, is that it worked. It was a very surrealistic experience to say the least.
Directed by Matt Frame, Camp Death III in 2D comes off like a weird dream that you have after watching a slasher film, where everything seems to be normal, but the pieces just aren’t quite fitting together. The film has over 20 people with writing credits. So that explains some of the chaos that makes up this film. It takes place in a place called “Camp Crystal Meph” (nice little play on words using crystal meth, and what we think is Mephistopheles?) where mentally-ill counselors and campers are gearing up for their stay there as they have turned it into a retreat. The only problem is that there is a killer on the loose that has killed 431 people over the past 6 summers at this camp.
There are a lot of throwback references to old Friday the 13th films in Camp Death III in 2D, which was really fun to see. And despite how silly it is, it does have some redeeming horror qualities that are peppered throughout the film. If they had wanted to make a serious horror film, the talent was definitely there. The sound and special effects departments, in particular, did a fantastic job. That being said, the overall vibe of this film is that of a sort of surrealistic comedy movie trapped in a horror shell.
Overall, Camp Death III in 2D is hard to rate on a traditional horror scale. It gets pulled in so many directions, you never know what to expect, but that’s also what makes this film enjoyable. It reminded us of a Troma film in that it doesn’t take itself very seriously at all, and goes way outside the box even going as far as to throw some curveballs like short musical segments. It even has some scuffed star wars scenes and still manages to bring some cheesy gore while loosely sticking within the horror sandbox. Even though we have absolutely no idea how to rate this in terms of a horror film, we definitely thought it was enjoyable. Even if it was some weird confused dream where nothing makes sense, yet everything makes sense. It has a lot of heart and a very imaginative artistic vision. We definitely recommend you watch this.

Bonus! Here are some interesting fun facts from the PR leading up to the film’s release:
The dual World Records for ‘Shortest Movie Trailer’ and ‘Longest Movie Trailer’ have been submitted to both Record Setter and Guinness World Records. “These records will undoubtedly not fill cast and crew with pride” declared ‘Camp Death III in 2D!’ Director, Matt Frame, “However, they do perfectly fit into the theme of the movie: abject stupidity!”
Both trailers are online and available to view. Shortest: https://youtu.be/h_e7MLkzntc Longest: https://youtu.be/qdQLk_6cpzo
The record for ‘Shortest Movie Trailer’ was set with a trailer clocking in at just 500 Milliseconds. The record for ‘Longest Movie Trailer’ was set with a trailer clocking in at 7 hours, 20 minutes, and 1 second, beating the previous Guinness World Record Holder (Swedish director Anders Weberg for his experimental film ‘Ambiance’) by a mere one second. “Hopefully Anders doesn’t see the one-second thing as a slap in the face,” stated Frame “then again, his movie ‘Ambiance’ has a runtime of 720 hours (30 days.) He should probably get used to people wanting to pummel him.” ‘Camp Death III in 2D!’ is a comedy-horror parody of ‘Friday the 13th Part III 3D’ that has enjoyed a successful festival run since September, racking up 15 acceptances, 4 awards, and several nominations.
