Movie Review: Bermuda Island (2023)

Bermuda Island is an indie horror film written by Michael Mahal, Sonny Mahal, and Robert Thompson and directed by Adam Werth. It’s about a flight that has some turbulence and crash-lands on an island. But the island is already inhabited.
That’s right. The flight controls go haywire like in most Bermuda Triangle references in movies, making the plane crash-land in the ocean. The survivors make it to shore and all kinds of craziness ensues. I guess that would have to be the first problem with this movie. The Bermuda Triangle is known for some weird alien-type stuff, but this Bermuda Island has a bunch of humanoid creatures living on it that look like they are all close relatives of Old Gregg. They eat people, but other than that, they weren’t really that intimidating. Like they just want to hang out and drink Bailey’s from a shoe.
There were a few different plot points that seemed to go nowhere. There was the Karen of the plane, and there was a cartel guy being escorted on the plane by like 3 FBI agents. He sneakily took a key out of their pocket for his cuffs but that whole character arc went nowhere. Seemed like kind of a waste. There were some other characters that made it further than they should have, too, though. The character development and interactions were all over the place in this.
There were a few nice scenes that cracked us up when people would get shot suddenly. There was also a funny intimate moment where these two people were making out near a waterfall with some porno-ish music and skinny dipping when some creeper shows up, so they beat him and throw him into the river. Soon after, the softcore music starts back up and they are making out again in the jungle as if nothing happened.
Overall, this was a somewhat enjoyable indie film. We feel like it could have been a bit more polished in the writing, but it was entertaining. The Old Gregg monsters, the cheesy gore, the weird drama, the character interactions… It was good, but for all the wrong reasons. We do hope to see more from this team, as there were a lot of positive things in the production and concept. It just needed to be good for more of the right reasons.
