Movie Review: Amber Road (2023)

by

Amber Road is an indie horror film written and directed by . It’s about a seedy underground network of people who are working for a dark web torture channel where viewers can pay to subscribe, watch victims get tortured and dismembered, and chat with each other whilst doing so. But there is more to the story than what is shown to the audience.

What we liked:

  • There were some notable actors in this one like Vernon Wells (Commando, The Road Warrior, Weird Science) and Tom Sizemore (The Relic, Saving Private Ryan, Blackhawk Down) and it’s always nice to see some veterans in these indie horror films.
  • There is a considerable amount of gore, and the practical effects were done pretty well.
  • The plot and overarching story were interesting and engaging.
  • Rachel Riley did a great job as the sadistic mortician.

What we thought could have been better:

  • The acting was very hit-and-miss, though, some of the odd line delivery may have been due to dialogue issues.
  • The story at times felt like there was more to it that was left out and somewhat rushed, possibly to keep it under 90 minutes.

Overall, while Amber Road isn’t a masterpiece, it did have some qualities about it that we liked. The story was interesting, the gore was pretty solid, and Amber Road does have some unexpected twists, with some other unique traits that made it worth the watch. We wish the story would have been more fluid, and that there would have been more things explained that we can’t get into here without giving anything away, but it has a couple of tricks up its sleeve that make up for this. We would recommend this to indie horror fans that are into stories about the deep web and practical effect gore with a twist. We do hope to see some more from Barsuglia in the future, as he definitely has some skill and an eye for horror.

Amber Road is releasing on 1/10/23 on DVD and Blu-Ray and will also be widely available starting 1/30/23 on VOD
