Movie Review: Allegoria (2022)

by

Allegoria is a horror film written and directed by Spider One. It is an anthology in which each story is about an artist’s work haunting them. This isn’t the first film that Spider One has been a part of, but it is his debut feature as a writer/director.

What we liked:

  • John Ennis had an outstanding performance to kick things off in the first segment. This was some of the best acting we had seen in a while in general, and he stole the show. Just outstanding.
  • The concept was great. Anthologies are always fun, and this one had a unique idea with an artistic twist.
  • There were some nicely-executed elements of horror here. Some of the imagery and sound was on-point and provided some really good atmosphere.

What we thought could have been better:

  • The film is comprised of a few different stories but doesn’t follow the traditional anthology format. Most anthologies typically have one overarching story in which all of the mini-segments are part of one larger picture, or they are all different and there is no overarching story. There was only one segment that really broke from the main story, but why not tie it in? If there is a segment about a writer, they could have been writing about a sequel to the film that other characters had been watching, and that would have tied it into the rest of the overarching story. It just seemed out of place and detracted from the flow of the rest of the film.
  • There were some audio inconsistencies that were offputting at times.

Overall:

For a writing and directorial debut, this was a great first effort by Spider One. Despite our gripe about the one segment of this anthology not really fitting into the grand scheme of things, the segment itself was good, and the film as a whole was enjoyable. The acting was excellent, the cinematography was good, and there are a lot of scenes that showcase Spider One’s vision and talent here as a capable horror writer and director. We are definitely excited to see what comes next and would recommend this to horror fans out there looking for something new.

Allegoria releases on demand and on Shudder starting August 2, 2022.
