Movie Review: Hallowed Ground (2019)

Hallowed Ground is a horror/thriller written and directed by Miles Doleac. It is from Historia Films and distributed by Uncork’d Entertainment. The film is about a lesbian couple who decide to stay at a cabin to work on their relationship and some other weird things are happening around them during their stay. The movie kicks off with a confrontation between some rednecks and a Native American. Years later when this picks up, the story gets a bit muddled but this theme is where most of the story lies.
This film is about two hours long. The first thing that should be pointed out is that this film should not be two hours long. It’s way too drawn out where it didn’t need to be, and there aren’t enough scenes to make up for the long periods where nothing happens. Even the premise doesn’t abide by its own rules that the story is driven by.
The acting in this was pretty decent. Most of the actors had prior experience, and there wasn’t anything that really stood out in that department as being bad. The problem was more that nothing really stood out at all. This played out more like a Lifetime movie than a horror film. It’s basically more focused on the lesbian couple’s relationship issues and any horror kind of takes the backburner. Even the scenes where it tried to dip into the horror side of things were just not good.
Overall, Hallowed Ground misses the mark in the horror category. It could probably succeed as a slow-burn thriller, but even at that should not be anywhere near two hours long. There is just too much time where you are wondering when something is going to happen. It spreads itself too thin, and instead of having the main focus just be about this history of blood between two parties, it focuses on the couple’s relationship issues.
While we can’t recommend this one, you can find it on 6/7/19 in select theaters, and on VOD on 6/11.
